U.S. Rep. Artur Davis presented "Poverty in Alabama: The New Civil Rights Struggle" on Jan. 10, 2008 at Spring Hill College. A Montgomery native, Davis emphasizes social responsibility in this excerpt from his speech. Davis is a key Alabama liaison for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Davis's talk has been edited to fit the 10-minute time limit.
I wish to first say this that i very much applaud Congressman Davis for his expressed pride and love for the State of Alabama. This is in a lot of cases half the battle in determining whether a political leader is truly just and good versus unfair or bad(which is not the case for Artur Davis.)However I must say that he makes some comments that express bluntly the problem with the political ideals that most legislators have that if we are not careful will run our country into the dirt.

He says if we can have a female and a man of the african american race in contention for the presidencey, why cant we pass a healthcare bill that doesnt rest on the size of your bank account? Because we are somewhere around 10 trillion dollars in debt that continues to multiply exponentially and will one day be so large that the United states will collapse from within! It has to stop somewhere and in this economy I say the BUCK stops here.

Alabama is very fortunate to have a leader like Artur Davis. I applaud his willingness to stand for the common good of all citizens.
