Setting :
Gus Cannon, banjo/jug/vocal-1
Hoses Woods, banjo/vocal-2/kazoo
Noha Lewis, harmonica

Recordingdate : Thu 3 Oct. 1929, Vi V38611, Victor Label

Note : Gus Cannon And His Jug Stompers are perhaps the best ,BUT there are others too.
On this one you can hear the sound of Skiffle from the 1950:th. Funny, but good songs never die !

This one is dedicated to a good friend !

Enjoy !
Peace !

  • Thanks for posting this.... love the story about how Gus had pawned his banjo to pay his heating bill just before this became a # 1 hit for The RooftopSingers, giving Gus a new start at 78! Gives me hope :-)

    Greetings from Australia!!!

    Ross

  • @rosslavel Thanks Ross !

I do my best to keep the oldies alive !

Ya, to pawn an instrument to pay a bill, is known to me, cause, I was hitch-hiking in Great Britain in the sixties. Me and my git. but when I arrived home, I had nothing in my pocket, so I pawned my git. "Angelica", which had helped me to finance the trip, singing in the streets.

Of course, I payed the loan and I still have "her", as my best git. ( "She" is on some clips I've uploaded.)

    Good comment !

    Peace Brother !

  • Put this on my ipod. Everyone at my high school thinks I'm weird for listening to stuff like this even though I listen to almost everything. Great song. Great band.

    Thanks pal.

  • @MuffinManTF You are not weird for listening. You have a good taste in Music Man !

Tell your friends listen to the true Music, The Blues. And I'm glad you have the song in your ipod. Me myself have Mr Sonny Boy Williamsson, the good harp-player, as a calling signal in my cell phone. I'm not weird. People are ! *smile*

    Peace Brother !

  • I didn't know anything about the origins of this song until I saw a documentary about banjo music in the US on PBS last night. Lo and behold, I found it here on youtube—thanks for posting it!

  • @snicky58 You're Welcome !

You see, we all have the Blues sometimes.

In bad or good times !

  • @kickingmule Thanks for replying, Urban! I'm glad to have discovered what you're doing. I appreciate it. I love blues, and I always love learning more.
