These drills can be done with a bucket or with a chair as an obstacle to work around on the ground ball hit right at the player. We do a lot of barehand work on the gym floor where we don't get bad hops. This is a great way to get a lot of ground ball progresion work while working on the proper glove hand action, footwork, and fieldong position.
Our biggest belief is that the good feet create good hands. We teach our guys a concept called "happy feet", which means don't let the feet stop moving. We teach big steps early to the ball and then as we approach contact with the ball to have short choppy steps to keep from becoming an object at rest. In this drill we exaggerate the foot movement to emphasize the importance of keeping the feet moving throughout the play.

good drill. What is the deal with the choppy foot movement?
