  • You're not playing the rhythms accurately, and your drums aren't tuned properly. Your time is all over the place, and you clearly have no concept of sound. Also, you play timpani like it's a snare drum. It isn't.

You're in high school apparently, so I would blame your teacher for assigning you a piece that is too difficult for you. Work on the fundamentals. Elliot Carter is a great composer, and these are good timpani pieces, so stop disgracing them with your lousy performance.

  • I am a teacher and I posted these videos as a teaching aid. This is a high school student, and your comments are insulting, not constructive. Feel free to make comments, but please do it in a polite, constructive way.

Anyone can learn something by playing Carter etudes - they're not "reserved" only for certain people to be allowed to play them.

  • this piece was written for Saul Goodman, my teacher's teacher, and my teacher actually played it for Mr. Goodman

  • I understand what you mean when you commented on rhythm, intonation and sound quality, but at the same time, this kind of criticism could have been constructive.

And, when you said, "I watched your videos too, and they have plenty of room for improvement as well," were you refering to me? If so, I should let you know that I do not have any of my personal videos posted up. If you were refering to linguamortua, then I disagree with you because his playing is pretty good.

  • yeah, you commented, but it was in such a rude and unnecessary way that it gave off the impression that you think your a badass. no one cares if you think it wasn't good, so don't post a comment if nothing in it is postive or useful.

  • I agree...i've seen too many insulting and overcritical comments on youtube. Criticism is ok, but it has to be constructive...

  • Judging like a professional? I commented on rhythm, intonation, and sound quality. ANY musician should be focusing on these FUNDAMENTAL elements. Also, I don't think it's educational to demonstrate that it's okay to give a lazy performance of a good piece. I would be glad to post some of my own stuff. I don't remember claiming myself to be a bad ass, but that's fine. I watched your videos too, and they have plenty of room for improvement as well. See comments above.

  • Timpanimike, I agree with gmsdrum and linguamortua. Don't judge high school musicians like you would professionals (or fellow college/university students). When they get to university or college, they will grow and they will learn the techniques. It is not often that you see/hear high school students playing advanced timpani pieces, and I am very impressed to see a high school student play such pieces. I believe that this fellow will go far.

  • If you are such a bad ass timpanimike, why don't you show the rest of us how to "properly" play the stuff. Don't be so hard on the kid, he's obviously having the opportunity to play something other than a silly two drum etude... I don't understand why people have to be so righteous about this kind of stuff. If we were all pros we probably wouldn't be posting stuff on youtube.

  • Very impressive for any HS player to play this difficult piece. Congrats
