The Water Festival in Phnom Penh (and other smaller incarnations in cities across Cambodia) is one of the country's largest and most festive holidays. The three-day festival is celebrated in mid-November, with the specific date depending on when the Tonle Sap River reverses flow back into the Mekong - the only river in the world to do so. Over 500 villages build and race wooden boats of up to forty rowers down the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh.
Millions of Cambodians come from the countryside to partake in the festivities. Free concerts, cheap beer, delicious street food, and carnivals abound. At night the Royal Palace is lit up and an hour-long fireworks display entertains the crowds on the riverside. Dozens of forty-foot tall colorful floats glide down the Tonle Sap, each representing a different government ministry.
