The multi-author nature of the text of the Hebrew Bible has led biblical scholars to postulate its creation by centuries of writers who collected, compiled, revised, edited, and interpreted ancient traditions.
The German biblical scholar, Julius Wellhausen first proposed the Documentary Hypothesis to account for inconsistencies in the Pentateuch.
The books of the Torah (Pentateuch) contain numerous internal contradictions -- differences in content, vocabulary, and writing style. These differences are evidence of multiple authors (Documentary Hypothesis). The consensus among many biblical scholars is that there are four main sources (known as J, E, D, and P). These sources contributed to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Further, the final editors are termed as R (redactors). Thus, those responsible for the Hebrew Bible are collectively referred to as J, E, P, D, and R -- where J=Yahwist, E=Elohist, D=Deuteronomist, P=Priestly; and R=Redactors.
Clues to the timing of the various sources include textural features such as northern influences (post 722 BCE); tolerance of rural shrines versus insistence on a central shrine (pre- and post-Josiah in 622 BCE); and, emphasis on Yahweh-only policies, separation from neighbouring peoples, and prevention of intermarriage with Canaanites (exilic and post-exilic, 597-538 BCE).
Deuteronomy bridges the first four books of the Pentateuch to the subsequent Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings).
Yehezkel Kaufmann uses the term historiosophy to describe the Deutoronomistic historian's attempt to interpret the significance of historical events as evidence of themes of reward and punishment.
