The National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest was inspired by the work of Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Rube Goldberg, known for his drawings of overly complex contraptions being used to accomplish simple tasks.
Each year, students from schools around the nation gather at Purdue University to compete to design a machine that uses the most complex process possible to complete a simple task in 20 or more steps. The task for the 2008 contest: to make a hamburger.
