I don't mean to be insulting, and I'm not sure if this has been pointed out earlier, but this recording is an imposter. It is of someone trying to recreate the original recording. It's apparent through the tone, the ornaments deviate from the original in a couple of places, and the piano is of a completely different timbre than that of the original. Maybe I'm just going crazy, but I have listened to the original so often that I know it like the back of my hand.

Not nessecarily, just because you compose something, you must not be the best artist- like no every poet is automatically gifted with a brilliant voice to sing / or read his lyrics.

Okay, I'm wrong. This is a hoax recording. Thanks for your PM Bluegrandpiano. Indeed listening to other YouTube's of this 1981 recording (we know it's infact 1981because of stolen visuals element) you can hear clearly that this is not the same - tone and dynamics are out by a long shot. But nonetheless the combined tempo and rubato start out almost identical. Clever! But not Gould! :' (

Some help perhaps: "Shortly before his death in 1982, Gould re-recorded the Goldberg Variations digitally and in stereo in the Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City. He largely abandoned the showmanship of the 1955 performance and replaced it with a more introspective interpretation that included more calculated phrasing and ornamentation." [Exert from Wikipedia article "Bach: The Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould recording)"] However, this could be a grammatical error - recorded in 1981??

"The original recording" you say? Not sure what you mean? There are many recordings of Gould playing the Goldberg Variations, the most notable being one in 1955 and another in 1981. There seem to be several others showing up here on YouTube also. I don't know of such a recording in 1982 however, so perhaps this is what you are angling at?? And yes, the tone does sound rather odd, though I'd like to think (if this is not a hoax) that he chose to use an unconventional sounding piano for this one.

    Dear pluspiano,

when Christina Rosetti once said about Cardinal Newman :

"O weary champion of the cross, lie still ----"

then I will change it to honor Glenn :

"o weary champion of piano, lie still----"

    Thanks for posting.

You are right. This is surely not Gould playing, or he must have had a really really bad day.

Z każdą sekundą słuchania można zapadać się coraz głębiej w muzykę. Czy też poprzez muzykę w coś niepojętego. Niebywałe wykonanie.
