Headed home from Brewster, NY, while waiting for the 9:16 train to Grand Central, the crossing gates at the end of the platform activated at an odd time. Two northbound trains had just arrived and departed within the previous hour, so what could the third one be? Spotting red markers, I thought 'Diesel'...and then 'Out of the Ordinary', followed quickly by "That's why you carry a camera with you at all times". I missed the first blast of the horn, but got the rest.

And right as I hit the stop button on the camera, the gates activated again, but this time it was for the approaching 9:16 train.

So this is the result--Metro-North BL20 #127 strolls through Brewster station late one night, headed up to Southeast, or possibly points farther north. Who knows--it's something else to put up, and another chance to diddle with video settings in an effort to get something that doesn't require a high-powered PC to play smoothly*.

(*Eh, didn't work this time)

  • Great video! Does anyone make models of these? Thanks for all the awesome videos!

  • Not any that I know of. Maybe if they become more widespread someone might, but right now they look too much like run-of-the-mill Geeps for most companies to risk trying to sell this as something different. We're still trying to get FL9's, and there are lots more paint schemes for those.

  • That's an awesome looking train. Your camera is high quality.

  • And to think, it's not even an HD camera, just a Canon superzoom-class digital camera recording at 640x480 and 30FPS (although at an insane bitrate--15 *megabits* per second O_o, as opposed to the 350 or so Kb/s for videos served back to viewers)

  • Very good video quality! Mind I ask what device you were recording with?

  • Canon PowerShot SX100IS digital camera.

  • That's par for the course in NY, southern CT, and Long Island, as well as parts of North Jersey. It's all commuter rail into NYC, so there's massive ridership, which means quality facilities.

  • Nice catch! I really like the BL20GHs, and I hate how so many people badmouth them. I think they're just upset that they replaced the FL9s. Honestly though, the FL9s would need to be replaced one day.

  • Nice Station.... We have NOTHING like this here in Michigan :(

  • BTW, great video quality Railride! Not too many videos up of the BL20GH's.
