  • Thanks, that's helpful. I'm just starting out in metal hardening. Mostly mild carbon steel. Could you tell me a good source for treating it? Thanks.

  • I dont know quite what you mean by that question. by a good source do you mean a website or what?

  • How does this method improve the strength? Compared to oilbath? Does it make the metal brittle?

  • there are different types of metal that react differently to treatment. For example there are some metals such as O-1 that are oil hardened and then 1050 that is Water hardened.

  • Mild steels (1045 and below) can only be case hardened through carburizing the steel (adding carbon to the steel by heating it up in a dirty, or carburizing flame, I prefer A-2 air quench or O-1 oil quench, though I will brine quench spring steels.
