This is a video presentation of pictures and video taken at the visit of The Moving Wall in Lakeport, CA June 11-15, 2009. The music, "At the Wall" was written and performed by Scott Wirt. It is used by permission.

The Moving Wall was built in 1983-1984 by the Vietnam Combat Veterans, Ltd. John Devitt, Gerry Haver, and Norris Shears developed the concept and actual construction of The Moving Wall. Their goal was to share the feelings and experiences that they perceived at the dedication ceremony of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.

Many veterans and the general public may not have the opportunity to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; therefore, The Moving Wall has more than visited 1,150 communities to offer the opportunity to honor and respect those that made the ultimate sacrifice through remembrance and education.

There are 58,256 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, with all names listed in chronological order based on the date of death. The names include confirmed casualties as well as those who remain missing.

Spanning 252.8 feet in length, The Moving Wall is an imposing site. Constructed of aluminum with a dark finish, the names are silk-screened upon the surface, The Moving Wall consists of an East Wall and a West Wall. The height is 4 feet at the ends and 6 feet at the center; it is shaped like a V with the center angle of 90 degrees to 125 degrees to provide flexibility in site location.

The Moving Wall is a half-size replica, the only replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Other traveling memorials are replicas of The Moving Wall.

  • Scott, I met you at RMCC this past Sunday (Steve Kittl) -What a tremendous tribute to all those who gave their lives for this country. Loved the song -your voice is superb. I did not serve, but many of my friends did and gave their lives. I am truly humbled. God bless you -God bless America, God bless those who serve for us.
