not only is it a gopher tortoise, but people from the sandy pine forest regions of south alabama, south georgia, and north florida refer to them as "gophers". This man is not demented or anything he is just using the language of his region.

That species of tortoise is called a Gopher Tortoise. It's not a turtle by definition as a turtle has a hinged plastron and it certainly does burrow a prolific amount of tunnels 20 feet underground in dry sandy conditions.
(which incidentally protect most of the other wildlife during brushfires)
So everything he said was completely accurate and everybody making fun of him for calling it a gopher is really just just uneducated themselves?
