Jennifer Kuvlesky, of IBM, the importance of effectively managing the virtualized environments. A lot of times the tools that businesses have to manage these environments arent virtual-aware. Management Edition for AIX from IBM provides service management functionality for the AIX Power environment. The capabilities that AIX contain are the ability to discover the virtual and physical environment and report on changes, so when an incident does occur in the environment, businesses can quickly see that a change occurred and understand the root cause of the problem.
Jennifer Kuvlesky. Im the Product Manager for Management Edition for AIX.
The role of virtualization in a dynamic infrastructure is that it optimizes the infrastructure layer, so what that means is youre able to rapidly scale out, youre able to more--make more efficient use of your resources. So we see customers starting with virtualization as a starting point.
Well, once theyve consolidated and virtualized, theyve got this new environment to manage, and a lot of times the tools that they have to manage that environment arent virtual-aware, and so the challenges that they have is seeing into those virtual environments, so the LPARs, the workload partitions, and understanding the utilization, the reason why they purchased virtualization capabilities in the first place.
Management Edition for AIX is an IBM offering that provides service management functionality for the AIX Power environment
The capabilities that Management Edition for AIX contain are the ability to discover the virtual and physical environment, and this provides the ability to understand the relationships between that environment so when a change will be made to that environment -- to an LPAR or an image or an application -- that we know the impacts upstream and downstream. Secondly, it provides for tracking of configuration changes and reporting on those changes, so when an incident does occur in the environment, we can quickly see that a change occurred around that same time and understand that thats probably the root cause of the problem. That saves about 50 percent in the time that it takes to resolve an incident.
The third feature is compliance reporting. What this allows customers to do is to look at a gold standard of a LPAR or a workload partition or a server and compare that against like resources. And so we can see with this feature configuration drifts in the environment and make changes accordingly.
The benefit is that customers can proactively procure resources or they can make planning decisions in advance, having that information.
Many customers are struggling because their data center is running out of power, they dont have enough energy to support their servers, and so theyre turning to virtualization to help them address that challenge. So one of the customers that we have, they used the capabilities in Management Edition for AIX to understand how their virtualization project is progressing and to understand the energy impact that their virtualization is making--their virtualization project is making. So with the discovery reporting, they were able to report on physical to virtual server ratios and compare that against the energy metrics that are collected to understand how well their virtualization project is impacting energy usage, as well as it helps them in planning for the future growth of their data center.
One of our customers, by understanding usage patterns, was able to defer hardware purchases 50 percent of the time, because as customers would come and ask for additional capacity, they could provide the data that showed that they did not need additional capacity.
