Foolish Pleasure raced at the very top of his class at age two, age three and again at four. Contrast Hard Spun retired to stud voluntarily after about seven months in the national spotlight, and Bernardini, retired to stud voluntarily after five months in the national spotlight....or even Street Sense, who probably would have made an outstanding four year old, denied a chance at greatness, by his owners...

@ponyiq Wow, thank you for helping him. 28 Starts, 11 Wins, 6 Places, 5 Shows - won the New Orleans Handicap (1-1/8miles) in 1974, a race won in 1984 by Wild Again, the first Breeders Cup Classic winner, in 2003 by HOTY Mineshaft, and in 2009 by Macho Again (2nd to Rachel Alexandra in the Woodward). For the old Roseben Handicap (6F : 1940-1953, 1981-1995/ 7F : 1954-1980) that was held at Belmont Park Lord Rebeau set the 7 furlong record of 1:21.00 in 1976. That record will always be his now.

i think, if ruffian was still alive and racing against colts she would of ran that race, foolish pleasure was awesome what a finish that was!
but i think ruffian would have won the match race....

Wow, he even beat the amazing Forego! I underestimated this fantastic thoroughbred!

I was blessed to own Lord Rebeau for the last year of his life. He was in very poor condition but he was all champion. I bought him from the breeding farm for a dollar, they were afraid of him. He was 26 years old, died at 27. He died quietly in his stall. He was a true feisty to the end. He was crippled from arthritis. His last days consisted of being turned out with several mares during the day, stalled at night, fed four times a day. He deserved better than where he ended up before I got him.

Like many of you, I bemoan the fact that so many outstanding thoroughbreds are whisked off to the breeding shed before they have a chance to fulfill their potential on the racetrack. That cheats the heck out of the racing fan, and the game itself.
Can anyone think of incentives/penalties that would discourage this practice? Big Brown should be back on the track and running, not waiting around for the Travers, then just one more race, then retirement. Ridiculous!

Holy cats, what a finish! Thanks so much for posting this--really enjoyed it! (Poked around online and read that Forego was carrying 134 here to Foolish Pleasure's 125. Any chance you might know what Lord Rebeau was carrying?)

Glad you liked it. Yes, it's a heck of a race. Not sure about Lord Rebeau's impost, it's proving difficult to find. I would guess it was close to what Foolish Pleasure was carrying.
Thank you for watching.

Thanks very much again!

You're welcome. I've recently discovered that Lord Rebeau only carried 116 pounds in this race.
Take care.
