it's a form of passphrase security for bluetooth. probably some module in the phone measures the movement. a bluetooth security module uses that information to provide a passphrase. when 2 phones are shaking the exact same whey they should provide the same bluetooth passphrase

create an adhoc network and exchange for instance contact details, similar to a business card. The benefit of the 'handshake' (excuse the comms. reference!) would be to ensure other devices in the vicinity do not receive the information - a sort of secure handshake.
