Vivid memory of the first time I heard this song...30 years ago, I was making the bed on a Saturday morning in my first grungy little apartment. This came on the radio and I sat myself right down on the just-made bed and listed with the tears streaming down my face. Afterwards, I said fuck cleaning the bathroom and went outside and walked around the block contemplating the true nature of genius (which I would never have, but which Mr. Waits clearly had in spades). I'm in awe still.

I remember sitting in my little one bedroom apartment by myself after my ex and I broke up with a 6 pack of beer and pack of smokes and just replay it thinking about life. Absoultly love it. I miss those times.

there's a time for this song to really hit you. if everything's going your way it's still beautiful, but when things are bad, this song makes me happy and sad at the same time, and if I'm in a dark enough place it always makes me cry, but i feel better afterwards, like it's washed out of me. utterly beautiful, tragic yet uplifting, my favorite song
