I would assume that Ed's biggest professional regret was the record album he made in the mid 1960's. He sang, or tried to sing, standards. Thankfully, Johnny Carson didn't fall into this, like so many other TV stars of the era did.

Back in 1981, I had the pleasure of being in the audience during the Tonight Show taping. I saw sort of a rapport between Johnny and Ed that you don't see on TV -- as Johnny was standing there doing his monologue, Ed was only a few feet away, staring at Johnny with a big grin, almost daring him to screw up -- and when Johnny would look Ed's way, Johnny would quickly look somewhere else after almost starting to laugh -- it was interesting to see!
