A Celebration of Life Video in Memory of
Robert D. Fernandes,"Bob", age 74 died peacefully on August 30, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 12, 1934 to Manuel and Rose (Abbondola) Fernandes in Yonkers where he was raised and educated. Bob was the owner and operator of the famous Jo-Jo's Hot Dog Stand noted for it's delicious onion sauce. The City of Yonkers DPW employed him for over 35 years as a Labor Supervisor of the Sanitation Department and as the Manager of the Sewer Department until his retirement in December 1999.On April 14, 1955 he married Mary Dugan in Sacred Heart Monastery Church, she survives living in Yonkers. He was a parishioner of this Church where he enjoyed volunteering for Bingo; a member of VFW Post 1666 and the Amackassin Club. Bob was an avid deep-sea fisherman and Mets fan. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the Destroyer USS Allen M. Sumner DD692 that circumnavigated the world following the route of Magellan. He was often quoted as saying, "I was in every 'Port of Call' in the world and there's no place like America!" He was proud to be a "Shellback!" We will miss our Sunday dinners and watching the Lottery results with him. Besides his devoted wife, Mary, he is survived by his four loving daughters, Laura (Frank) Sinatra, Jr. of Yonkers, Catherine (William) Nowak of Yonkers, Anne Riti of Cortlandt Manor and Jennifer DeMascio of Yonkers; nine cherished grandchildren, Christine and William Nowak, Frank III and Robert Sinatra, Danielle, Ashley and Mary DeMascio and Nicole and Robert Riti; one adored great-granddaughter, Gianna Nowak-Ujkic; two sisters, Marie Pizzuti of Scarsdale and Linda Silliman of Yonkers and many special nieces and nephews.
