Efrim Menuck explains how U2 or Arcade Fire use some kind of easy tricks in their music.
That was recorded during a SMZ show in Paris Bataclan in march 2010.
Efrim Menuck is one of the members of Godspeed You Back Emperor, a canadian band quoted by Arcade Fire as an influence for them.
Video comes from personnal footage of the Arcade Fire Show in Casino de Paris in July 2010.
For those who think that Efrim is serious on that recording, he is definitively not. He's just joking with the audience while tuning his guitar.

  • Never heard of this guy but obvously he is just a poor unfortunate, doing his best. Given what he knows about music I will probably never hear of him again. I hope he can find happiness and peace of mind.

  • @mroldsalty Thanks to all of you who replied to that video or voted -pro or against; I wanted this to be a space to share ideas about A.F.

I like their music but a bit surprised by choices of the band.

Why will they play only in festivals in Europe (or in the worst room of Paris- le Zenith)?

During their shows why do they favour songs looking like hymns for stadiums, instead of songs like In The Backseat?

Music doesn't seem to be as important as their career to them, but it's essential.

  • I've received this message from scott Rodger who said:

"Efrim, can you give our camera back to us.

Perhaps if your addiction to Romane Conti could be contained you may actually be able to complete a song."

I don't know what he is talking about.

  • @porhmonkey Because you haven't been looking very far for good music outside of the obvious choices

  • bleh...he has honest reasons and backs them up. what can ya do.

i don't think his reasons are well-founded at all, but whatevs.

  • @melieannful What s wrong with not having a self titled album? are the rest of the members of godspeed you! or arcade fire or any of the hundreds of awesome bands anything sort of musical geniuses just because they didn't have a self titled album? Get your shit together. Music is not about names. It s about music.

  • People (musicians) who choose to spend their time trash talking other people's music should focus their energies on their own "creativity"- especially when their first self-title release isn't until their 40!

  • Surely, he's not joking. He bothers to explain and provide examples. I enjoyed watching this just to hear honest dissent without excessive use of comparison.

  • i don't care either way. he's entitled to his opinion and he spoke on it. i prefer one over the other and that's that. i'm sure everyone posting on this video has voiced an opinion or a distaste for another band before...

  • @drofnoise555

    Have you heard Arcade Fire?

Because if you had actually listened to them you would know that their music isn't pretentious one bit.

  • @JohnnyRipper70 really? have you heard arcade fire? i think they created a new genre "pretentious douche faux-rock"

  • @mikester5983 i think the comment is more on the blandness of their tunes rather than the simpleness
