Welles' moving monologue on authorship and Chartres, in his final completed feature-length work, his 1976 experimental essay 'F for Fake'.

With the authorship of Chartres remaining unknown, it would seem to belong to us all.

  • Let's face it -- Welles was a bad ass. That segment is touching and profound. It is one of the best in cinema.

  • Unlike you for example, aimlessly wittering asinine nonsense in cyberspace. Idiot.

  • @DeanLeonard1 It's also a beautiful approximation of the existentialist view, both the secular and the Christian variety. We can only choose what we do.

  • I imagine that at the end of my life, I'll ask the Universe all those questions that people ask at that time. I also imagine I'll receive the answers.......... hearing this voice.

  • Beautiful

  • This is a very poignant reminder of the Buddhist concept of impermanence. Nothing lasts.

  • This is one of my very favorite passages in cinema - so simple and moving. Thank you for posting it.

  • "All our songs will be silenced... What of it? Go on singing!" I saw the film some 30 years ago while in university, and to this very day, this passage and these words are still etched in my memory. Sublime!

  • I agree that the audio is not great, but please listen again. Welles is saying that -- for all of the depressing aspects of life and the fact that all of us and our loved ones will one day die -- we all have song, music, art, and spirit within us. So we should keep living life to the fullest and find beauty in life.
