TEDxSydney - David Chalmers - The Extended Mind

David Chalmers is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Consciousness at the Australian National University.

Chalmers is interested in the relationship between mind, brain and reality. He is best known for formulating the "hard problem" of consciousness and for his arguments against materialism.

His 1996 book The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory was highly successful with both popular and academic audiences. In 2010 he gave the John Locke Lectures at the University of Oxford. These will shortly be published as his book Constructing the World . He also works on language, metaphysics, and artificial intelligence.

mind is already an obscure term. I don't think chalmers or andy clark are making it anymore obscure. The point is, once a coupled system has become established (as in the case of a poised notebook) the competency of the system deteriorates once the external factor is eliminated.

Wouldn´t it mean that he is unaware of the vast body of literature on the issue, that extends (at least) from Plato´s Prometheus to, for instance, B.Stiegler´s recent revival of the notion of hypomnemata (which includes a pharmacological dimension of the problem, thus, offering a critical perspective on the issue, just like Canguillem, Mcluhan, Derrida, Leroy-Gourhan, etc, once did..)?...

I feel like technology is a snapshot of your mind when its organized. Your mind is the accumulation of experiences but we're like badly organized computers where control+f doesn't find what we're looking for. For iphones and notebooks to be considered a true extension and integral part of our mind the information stored within them must be accessible by means other than using our external senses. Basically, instead of reading back your thoughts on paper, the device would respond to thought.
