This is part 3 of a rare documentary made juring the Making of the Empire Strikes Back between 1979-1980. If you consider this the best of the Star Wars films and love the score then this is the holy Grail of documentaries.

  • Thanks for this great documentary - I love some of these early John William films - before Star Wars as well. Thank you SO much for posting this! :) Made my day! :)

  • @monkeywho Well I think for me Williams peaked at around about The Empire. But that’s not to say there isn’t some great stuff yet to come....

  • Thanks for the upload Robkizzy! Amazing documentary.

  • The empire Strikes Back.... My favorite soundtrack of all time

  • I totally agree, and I've been studying film composers and film scores for many years... Empire has THE BEST film score of all time!

  • This was shown a few days before the UK release date right? Because looking through the documentary my first thought was wow, talk about spoilers.

  • An inertia starter!! Boy am I familiar with that!

  • @Bubo25 Yeah, from that point of view I totally agree, absolutely. TPM was nowhere near the quality TESB or any of the Classic Trilogy was and from the canvas of work TPM provided, not even the combined skill of Williams, Herrman, or Wolfgang himself could have pulled off the same magic.

  • @Koldeman I was really mostly talking about the films themselves rather than JW's talent. Although, in most cases a movie composer is only as good as the material he has to work with. With ESB he had some real meaty stuff to get his teeth into, and it shows in the ESB behind the scenes footage of him. After that, so-so. however, there is one score that brakes that convention, The Phantom Menace. The movie's dire, but JW's score is actually really, really good.

  • @Bubo25 I don't consider JW's scores for E.T., Raiders, or even some of his more recent works like Schindler's List to be "downhill". John Williams' worst far outperforms almost every other film composer at their best- even today at nearly 80 years old!

  • LOL! At first I though the Falcon brake down sound was actually the tape player breaking down. And I have seen the movie a hundred times. That's great work

  • So cool, the way he mixes those sound effects.

  • @Robkizzy The only reason JW peaked at ESB is because that's where SW peaked. After ESB it was all down hill from then on. :(

  • I wish he was returning for the final Harry Potter :'(

  • this is the kind of stuff that inspires kids to want to be sound designers for movies!
