In interviewing people for my documentary on the Ducky Boys Gang of the 1960's, we got to talking about the bad reputation of the Bronx, and how it came about.

In this clip, Prof Ultan tells how the reputation was gotten during a combination of Jimmy Carter, Howard Cosell and the Yankees, and the movie Fort Apache the Bronx... And how 30 years later, this reputation isn't valid anymore..

If you are interested in the real story of the Ducky Boys gang of the Wanderers movie, please check out my book Lost Boys of the Bronx: The Oral History of the Ducky Boys Gang - Available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and http://Lantern-Media.com

  • Hey J, Did you delete my original message?

It said "Mr Ultan really looks like he loves the Bronx" (or something like that)

  • Hey Ed, wasnt me who deleted it -- at least not on purpose... I did see your message tho - wonder where it went?

Anyway, its up again, Thanks for reposting!

  • He is delusional. The Bronx is better than is was in '77. But that's not saying much. There is much work still to be done in the Bronx. He must hang out in like Riverdale or something, the Bronx ain't pleasantville. Not by a longshot.

  • I agree with you in that the Bronx isn't near an idyllic paradise... But it doesnt deserve the reputation of being one of the worst boroughs/areas in the world... There are plenty of places much worse... (and plenty of places much better...

It all depends what part of the Bronx you're talking about... Woodlawn & Riverdale are definitely not in the same category of Fordham, but Norwood is definitely a place that has some nice (and crummy) places too..

  • CORRECTION ! The movie "Fort Apache The Bronx" was filmed in 1980 & was released to thearters on 02/06/1981.

  • @EwingOil Your point is more than valid, but try visiting Flint or Detroit,Michigan. These cities look like how the "South Bronx" used to look in the late '60's,'70's & early '80's.Mr.Ultan is a real cool guy and I have purchased many of his books.

  • Yes,The Bronx is much better than it was,but there's still room for improvement.I used to walk on E138th St.,Jerome Av.,W Fordham Rd. & Sedgwick Av. late at night and the only problems I had were the psychotic hookers. Those were some real scary broads ! I'm currently residing in Flint,MI and I can tell you without a doubt I'd much rather be back in The Bronx. My city has consistently ranked among the top 5 worst cities in the nation for years--arsons,abandoned houses, high crime, noise, everything.

  • This is a little misleading what he says, it's just that people outside NYC think of the Bronx or Brooklyn as a "Bad Place" when in fact anyone who knows better realize that these boroughs have both good parts and shit parts, which is based on the demographics of who is living there.

Walking in a Mooley Section of the Bronx at night is not equal to walking in a Jew Neighborhood or whatever.

  • The problem with the Bronx is the jury pool. People keep walking free that committed heinous crimes...usually against other Bronx residents. Enjoy and discuss...also this wonk probably hides in his ivory tower all day.

  • My mother grew up in the confines of the four one and I went to Fordham U, I love the bronx, its a special place. Like anywhere else its got good and bad areas. I'm looking to move to Bainbridge which is decent (and so is Norwood) but my buddy works in the 44 by Yankee stadium and thats still wild. Also, the BX house of detention was replaced by a Prison barge off hunts point and was filled beyond capacity in the 90's...its not a homeless shelter...

  • Greetings Prof. Ultan! You look great! It's quite a surprise to see you in my Youtube Related Videos for some reason. You remember me from the Bx County Historical Society. Keep in touch!
