Off of his Album "Death Won't Send a Letter", this is the last song on the album and was originally supposed to be the title track. The record executives felt as though the song was too much of a downer to be the title track. He stated in concert that he was staying up all night for days and was listening to nothing but Leonerd Cohen so the song takes on a melancholy tone. This is my personal favorite from the album.
Lyrics:
My dear son from the North
You look better these days than u did
your speaking is slow
and now that you know
But your suffering each stroke of your heart
Tell me, when did your life come apart?
With your writings recite
The jury's decided
That your exile has been self induced
With your profesis trampled
Your poor heart unraveled
Switched out for some strand of truth
And love is a game
To be played on a mockingbird stage
And I would have you for my own
Two wheels kick like steel drums on tire kitchen floor
Do not ask my forgiveness
Now do you still need more
Like a watchman in the tower
I've seen you bloom like a flower
But you are fading in the absence of rain
And your love is a game
To be played on a mockingbird stage
And I would have you for my own
And there'll come a time when we all
all must stand before we fall
And Im gonna be there when you do
So pour out for your spectaters, dreams and intentions
Still nothing is sweeter despite all your inventions
And the few secret promices locked in you rhyme
My love is nothing changing with time
Your just losing your precious mind
And your love is a game
To be played on a mockingbird stage
And I would have you for my own
And there'll come a time when we all
all must stand before we fall
And Im gonna be there when you do
So cry like Saint Christopher
Or preach like Saint Paul
Still your lips are still fall
And their no help at all
Cause you can't sue the lions
No you can't raise the dead
You are John The babtist
And they are ticking your head
