Here is a view of our stay at the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway, in Powys, Wales.

After a 6:30am wake up call at Llanfair, which turned out to be later than expected, opps, we went out and prepared one of the W&L's original locomotives, No.822 'The Earl', at Llanfair shed.

Whilst the main crew were preparing the running state of the engine, me and my dad were busy, getting the engine cleaned externally. My dad was in charge of polishing the paintwork, whilst I got the important job of polishing the brass, with both my dads and my own jobs being thoroughly praised by the main crew.

Not much of the actual cleaning was recorded, but this shows the activities after.

My thanks go to Phil (the fireman), John (the driver), Kevin (deputy manager, and apologies to him for not placing him in the main credits) and the rest of the W&L staff for their hospitality during our stay.

  • I hope you enjoyed your stay as much as I enjoyed watching your video. There's an impressive W&L video on here from a camera in front of the loco on the run up Golfa.

Are you looking to qualify as a driver somewhere eventually then?

  • I'm not sure wether I'll be able to have to the time to join somewhere to voluteer as a cleaner, let alone qualify as a driver.

I was told about the video up Golfa the evening before in the Goat hotel in Llanfair, and they told me how the trackwork made the video a bit jumpy in places. Look out for my video of 'The Earl' climbing Golfa, sometime in the near future.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • hehe. The boiler blow down is my favourite bit. Must have been really defening!

  • It wasn't quite as load as it appears. Its more of a muffled sound, than a blast.

  • Gosh is it really 2 years since I last saw this; it's really enjoyable and interesting to see how much work goes into getting a steam engine ready.

  • good video that is, seeing all the hard work be done to the engine
