Colorado health board considers limiting marijuana providers to 5 patients each KDVR

DENVER - There could be big changes in store for medical marijuana patients and providers. Monday the state health board will consider limiting medical marijuana providers to five patients each.

The proposal at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says there is nothing in Amendment 20 that allows for the creation of dispensaries, and that caregivers should be people, not businesses.

But Lori Cookston, co-owner of Cannabis Medical, says if the change is approved, she worries there won't be enough providers for the 9,000 registered medical marijuana patients in Colorado and customers will go to the streets for their drugs.

Plus, if the change is approved, she'd have to close her business. "The facility would be shut down. We'd have to sell it," Cookston said.

The state health board is set to take testimony at the Tivoli Student Union, Conference room 250 at the Auraria Campus, 9am - 4pm Monday. The meeting had to be moved to a larger facility because of the large number of people expected. . This is just one of several changes the agency is considering making as to how the voter-approved Amendment 20 is carried out.

The health department says there's nothing in the law that allows for the creation of dispensaries. It says caregivers supplying patients with marijuana must be people, not businesses.
