The Camel Trophy was an off road event, part competition, part expedition that took place in a different exotic location each year. It took place from 1980 until 2000. Up to twenty different nations took part, represented by teams of two competitors and two reporters in each vehicle. Called the "Olympics of off-road driving" the Camel Trophy was a very unique event. Land Rover was the vehicle of choice for most events. These vehicles were largely stock units, pulled off of the production line and outfitted with expedition equipment such as roll cages, roof racks, winches and bull bars. All were modified by hand at Land Rovers Special Vehicles branch. All are very special vehicles indeed.

  • how much does it cost to get your rover ready for one of these events?

  • Hello and thank you for your comment. The Camel was a corporate sponsored event that took place every year from 1980-1999. The vehicles (with the exception of the first and last years) were all Land Rovers that were basicly stock with the exception of a few additions like roll cages, snorkles, roof racks, winches, and beefed up rear springs for all the cargo. All of this kit can be bought either from Rover or aftermarket. With the vehicles I have kitted out I would say around $1000 to get close.

  • nice slide show, though i've watched nearly all the videos, films etc available about Camel Trophy these pics still amaze =)))

  • I had the great fortune to go off roading with Tom Collins in a new Range Rover! Tom was part of Team US 1987, and trainer for every Camel the US was involved with after. What a wonderful man. Thank you for your comment!

  • Im disappointed in the direction that Land Rover has taken there cars in America... great video man

  • Nice video! Refreshing to see some decent and appropriate music used in the background for once!

  • @shooter100300a Sadly, no. The Camel was run from 1980 until 1998 when the "last" Camel was run in Patagonia. There was one more after that, in 2000 but Land Rover had pulled itself out as a sponsor and the event was run with boats. Rover pulled its sponsorship because the focus of the event had shifted from an off roading expedition, to a bicycle and kayak competition. The Camel was a combination of adventure, competition and marketing the likes of which will probably not be seen again.

  • @Gris110 is this event still on the callender??

  • why is it so brave to drive a landrover around a field and some rocks lol note dnt take this comment bad i love offroading

  • muy bueno saludos desde españa

  • thanks for posting. In 1987 as a spotty 17 y/o Land Rover nut i ate, breathed and dreamt Camel trophy.I would go laning in my v8 series 1 living the dream.Like many I progressed to coils, TDIs, and cages and we all tried to copy the vehicles and challenges. To todays young offroaders this might be history, but to us oldies it was a great time.

  • very nice presentation of images, i so want one of these vehicles
