recorded: New York, January 29, 1930
Lyrics: Joe Primrose, Irving Mills.
Vocal: Sunny Smith. I went down to St. James Infirmary, saw my baby there. Stretched out on a long white table, so sweet, so cold, so bare. Let her go, let her go, God bless her. Wherever she may be, she can look this wide world over, she'll never find a sweet man like me.
When I die, I want you to dress me in straight-laced shoes
Box-back coat and a Stetson hat
Put a twenty- dollar gold piece on my watch chain,
so the boys will know, I died standin' pat.

This 78rpm-record is played on my portable "His Master's Voice" gramophone from 1938 (Serie 102c, with green leather case).

  • @FatManRedemption what are 8 years old?

  • 78 RPM and a song for side. I have some records loke this

  • I love "scrach" sound. Jazz and Blues for ever

  • This is King Oliver' Orchestra, here the chimes. It was recorded on 5-22-1930 Victor 22298-A Bluebird B-5466-A

  • Is the date recorded on the record label?

Duke Ellington did record this under the band name "Harlem Hot Chocolates" in March of that year. Vocals were by "Sunny Smith" who was actually Irving Mills.

The song is a lot older than Mills or his pseudonym "Joe Primrose".

  • It's KING OLIVER !!!!!!!!!!!!
