Bio-diesel requires HUGE amounts of agricultural land) and in turn needs oil based fertilisers and pesticides. Takes a lot of energy to produce the hydrogen in the first place. And where is that going to come from? Nuclear power is limited to the mining of Uranium which is finite resource. The only alternatives are Solar, Wave, Wind and Geothermal producing electricity. Add to this global warming. Reduced shipping and transportation, we are headed for a big crunch in next 10 years.

Watch for emerging technologies such as biodiesel from algae to solve the energy input/output problem.
You are absolutely spot on in your assessment of available energy. There is plenty of energy, we are just addicted to the "cheap" stuff.
