Played on my home made Akonting. Learned from the recording of Joe Diatta of the Jola people of Senagambia, West Africa by Nick Bamber. Ulf Jagfors posted.

  • How does those tuners work? I seen them (of course, not made of plastic) in african kora and xalam, but I can't belive they are holding instrument in tune.

  • You can buy cable ties in the hardware shop- used to wrap together electric wires. The string has a knot which can't slip through the tie when it's made tight. If the tie has the right tightness, it holds by friction on the pole. To tune, I hold the instrument with the tail on the floor and the other end against the chest. With the fingernails of both hands I pull the cable tie to raise the pitch of the string. If I raise it too high it's easier to push back a little to get the right pitch.
