Developed at EMSL, this straightforward method measures diffusion in supercooled liquids. A layer of atoms under the liquid, chilled to within a few degrees of freezing solid. The rate at which the atoms reach the surface is determined. From energy use to pharmaceutical shelf life, understanding the structure and stability of supercooled liquids and the amorphous solids they freeze into could address important questions.
