Special! Far Rockaway Bound R40 Slant A Train @ West 4th St [ Taken On Last Day Of Service ]

June 12th, 2009 marked the day that the last set of R40 slants were taken out of service...

The slants were created in 1967 and circulated through many routes. The last routes these cars were on were the A, B, D, N, Q, and W Routes

They have served us for over 40 years, and the NYC subway will change forever as these cars were the only unique cars in the system till now. What remains are the R40 Modifieds, R32s and R42 Subway Cars waiting for their time to retire.

The R40 Slants served us well and performed the best in terms of speed out of the other 60 foot cars in the system. They spent their last rides on the A and B lines. To me, they were known as the Coney Island Classics along with the R68 Subway Cars.

These cars has served their purpose and they will be missed.

  • I went to see the R-40 slants at the Transit Museum last friday with my fiancee. We both got teary eyed when we saw the slants. This was the very set that she wanted to take a pic of on the last day but couldn't. At least we had a reunion with these babies :D

  • My first ever NYC subway ride in 84 was on a slant - miss these unique cars.

This comes from the UK - good job they were refurbed and cleaned up !

  • Peace thanks for posting this info on the A Train. Check out this, GWETV presents this video on Far Rockaway on Youtube it's a must watch: "Hell In Far Rockaway NYC: The Poor Suffer Within The Light of Progress" or come to our channel to watch it now.

  • yeah, they served the "W" lines also (the pic in my youtube account shows me in the middle of a R40 slant W train). I can remember when I was a kid I used to look clearly through the tracks and tunnels due to their long side windows. These new R142 trains suck!

  • Although these are steel cars, and non organic vehicles you speak of, that caption you made at the end got me a little teary eyed, i grew up with the slants, all my life they were on the "B" line, then they went over to serve the "N". I am glad i am not the only train historian lover in this city, keep up the great memories.

cya =] and thanks for the memories.

  • help

  • i miss R40

  • Congratulations. I would like to much if R40 Slant be in operation currently. R40 Slant was one of my NYC Subway favorite trains. And to you?

  • Even saw it on the C.

  • Space Age (1960's) design that fell short--these had the most uncomfortable seats in the entire system! But I miss the tall window to look out the front.
