We left Sussex Airport (FWN) very early and dodged low level cumulus clouds enroute to Blairstown (1N7) to pick up my friend. Out of Blairstown this was my first ever takeoff with four passengers on board and close to gross weight. I have to say it really wasn't bad at all. It took up more runway and I executed a short field takeoff technique but we had plenty of room to clear the trees at the other end. So we climbed to 4,500 which was well over the low level cumulus clouds and set a direct course for Elmira (ELM) airport. I planned the course using ded reckoning but we had 3 GPSes on board to back us up. We didn't need the GPS and the course was a piece of cake but we'd go back and forth nit picking about being a quarter mile off course either way.
Arriving into Elmira we did not see the airport for a while because of some hills blocking the view. Tower cleared us to land just as the airport came into view. We were extremely high but pulling the power out brought the airplane down like a rock and I even had to return some power to make the airport. We entered the pattern on the base leg and had a very long final into the giant runway. After landing and contacting ground control, we taxied to the local FBO watching gliders taking off and airplanes from the museum.
We got directed in by one of the FBO staff (LMAO) to parking. I discovered that the fuel cap was open when I went to check the fuel quantity. At first I feared I might not have replaced it upon fueling at our departure but we derived that it must have opened during landing because all fuel was intact. The fuel truck operator fueled the plane and the bolt inside the gas cap broke and fell into the fuel tank. We had to have this repaired prior to flying back.
Check out Part 2 to continue.

are you really doing your runup on the runway?

@atcssct Yup! Really ghetto airport and not much going on there. No taxiway so runway is pretty much the only place to do it out there. Haven't been to Sussex a few years now.
