This is assuming an Ionian mode is been used. If the lydian mode was used, then you can start from the submediant and mediant!

As for my comment above, it was back when I was a definite scrub, haha. I had only started jazz and acted like I knew everything.
Anyway, I'm going into the Dorian Mode and D minor 7th scales for now, I'll look into supertonics and submediants... lol.
...and Clifford's transcribed solo on Joy Spring is killing me. ._.

Sure, cause when you play a song in a major key, you must play the 7th mode of whole tone scale all the time!
