I like David Sanborn's version much better! It is just too funky for words!

Ian Dury related on Desert Island Discs (Dec 1996) how "Change Of The Century" was one of his favourite albums and that he'd played it all the time. One day he met Charlie Haden and told him he'd nicked the bass line for "Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll" from Ramblin' - Charlie said that it was ok as he'd stolen it from an old cajun folk tune as well.
-
@Predulus - the bassline is actually a quote from an old folk song called "Old Joe Clarke." Charlie Haden must love that song, because he also quotes it in his solo on Pat Metheny's album 80/81, in the song "Two Folk Songs."

I wonder why Ornette Coleman has a reputation for always playing really dissonant "out" type of music that is hard to listen to. A lot of his tunes, such as this one, sound pretty bop-ish and have a lot of blues phrasing. And come on, that head is catchy as fuck. I know that the lack of a piano or any chord playing the instrument makes the harmony hard to follow, but I think most fans of straight ahead would dig this.
