@xEquineLuverx and any horse can barrel race.... not all are good at it but all horses can. He is ok but he needs alot of work. and PS he is in pretty good shape I ride him for an hour or more cuz i only get to see him when my step mom decides to be not insane witch is almost never...

@xEquineLuverx I tought him to turn like that along time ago... when doing barrels was just a dream for me, when he was only alowed to ride for 10 min. He learns stuff like that fast but if i dont understand exactly what im doing then he gets flustered and usally trys to run away. I wanted to know how to make him canter to the 1st 2 barrels and not buck. But typeing it out made me relize the only way to fix that is to make him do it and hope the dirt is soft that day.

@xEquineLuverx he has a great relashonship wit me, he follows me with no led line and calls when i come up to him he is just lazy and doesnt like it when people tell him what to do, witch works out ok cuz i dont like that eather and he loves to test me. He feaks out when people try to teach him new stuff, idk y but i think it has something to do with the fact that he was abused. He stays comest when i teach him but he still gets freaky. He turns really well....

@xEquineLuverx yeah.... he WAS a jumper then he was sold and abused for a year then he was sold again and has a pasture horse for a year... he doesnt know any leg cues well he turns sharper if i bump with my inside leg but i tought him that. (Pro barrel racer) Ik i dont plan to go anywhere on him, he is just teaching me alot about barrels, riding, and living. :) He's just starting to build up musle again but he an go for about an hour of riding without geting sweaty.
Can you take an ex english horse that knows absolutly nothing exept the pattern will they still help you or be like sorry this is for horses that know how to turn on leg presser or any of that stuff... im serous he knows nothing at all exept jumping and he'll run home if u lean and cluck. thats all he does... (he can w/t/c/g oviously i mean thats all in a branch of riding) Im trying to teach him but i want to be a pro barrel racer so he needs to be better. (im 13 and we still trot the barrels)

@1233Maya If your horse is a jumper, he should know leg cues rather well. And I don't see why he couldn't barrel race, because both diciplines need to be athletic, and jumpers are certainly athletic. As for wanting to be a pro barrel racer, it takes years of practice, and I lot of money. My advice is to learn off a finished barrel horse before teaching your own horse. It'll help you alot.

@xEquineLuverx plus i think he's tought me the most important lesson, When you turn the last barrel, you just gota hold on and trust that your horse will do his best :) when we turn to go home i (usally) give him his head and hold on, knowing there is a 50% chance that he will buck like a bronc, and a 49% chance run home at a slow gallop and about a 1% chance he will run as fast as he can.

@1233Maya You don't want to use your inside leg unless you are using it in sinc w/ your outside leg to drive him into the barrels. You want to use your outside leg around the barrels to prevent his hindquarters from swining out & to keep him underneath himself. And you don't need to ride him an hour to get him in shape. A simple 20 min. workout consisting of long trotting & loping at least 3 times a week works just fine. Watch/read up on Charmayne James' method. I think It'll help you a lot.

@1233Maya Well, it sounds like you first need to work on establishing a good relationship with him. Before you should be doing any barrel work, you want to make sure he works well off your leg cues, your body and seat, and he should able to collect himself and give to bit pressure. Being a barrel horse doesn't mean he shouldn't know those basic things. Once he's good and solid, you can start some pattern work. (c)

@xEquineLuverx I saw barrel racers useing their inside leg so thats how i tought him and now he turns really good if i bump with my inside leg and kinda doesnt know what im doing if i use my outside leg... he thinks i want him to turn both way

@1233Maya No offense, but if your horse "turns well", then why did you leave a comment asking for advice and if your horse could barrel race. And why would you leave the comment on a Charmayne James video? From the sound of it, you don't agree with her training methods. Did you even watch the video?
