Everglades challenge 2011. Day 1, before noon 2 miles off coast at Longboat Pass. Small Craft Advisory. Adverse wind and waves forcase until afternoon. We had strong headwinds and waves right in the direction that we wanted to go so a lot of tiller work trying to keep from slamming the waves head on. My camera mounted to boat so watch the horiz and the tuffs on the sails and you can see when I am level and catching air and when I have just taken a wave. This was alot of fun for a few hours but got very tiring and gives me no time to even get a drink of water. I was making ground as I was going south west but getting futher off the coast it only became even rougher and we got whitecapping waves. I got hit with a couple in the chest when I turned into them to much. I headed back in and was going to go in the pass but it calmed down and I was able to take on a south east heading and run along very near to shore so I stayed on the outside.

  • Hello, because of the wide angle camera it looks like one is in front but they are side by side and it is a biplane rig with lateen sails. When both are joined they are controled by one sheet in the middle. They also both have sheets which keeps the bottom boom from rising up the mast which keeps the sails tight and they are also used when sailing downwind wing on wing when both sails are out to oppsite sides of the boat. Thanks , Roger

  • Nice Video. Can you enlighten me about your sails, they seem to be joined - jib to main...do you control them with one sheet, are they easy to reef like that? many thanks,

  • Roger, we were a mile or so offshore at the time, and the wind and waves were pretty strong. Clarity rode them well, but we buried the bow often (it didn't slow us down, but watching the sprit go under was, um, interesting) and we got SOAKED! It was like sitting in front of a firehose as the water streamed off the aka. I think most of the seas we were in were 3 to 6 feet, but we saw bigger ones that missed us. What a ride!
