This installation was created for American Airlines new JFK terminal. In a hallway connecting the gates with the main lobby, forty massive HD screens, 1200 feet of wall space, 100 speakers and programmable lights provide an amazing and crisp media presence for Microsoft.
In our first project for this venue we realized that, due to the sheer scale of these screens, its impossible for the audience to take in more than five at a time. In order to shoot the vistas for Windows Mobile concept, we decided to shoot 360 degree footage using a rig with five HD cameras.
A few drawings and tests later, we found ourselves on a camera boat on the San Francisco bay with Mauricio, our HD tech, Kurt, our DP, and our skipper. Five clamshell monitors in a row show us the mind-blowing geometry of five 16x9 cameras with 10mm lenses, mounted on a circular rig at 72 degrees apart.
Turns out that when you use five cameras at the same time, the likelihood of one of them running out of battery or tape, or failing altogether increases fivefold. Another piece of advice: When the location scout tells you on the scout day that "this is a much clearer day than usual", listen to him.
Weve also finished single screen versions of these pieces that run at other airports, as well as web ads.
