This is my first completed stave drum. It's made with 2 Malaysian hardwoods: Mai Kelat & Mai Daeng. The links posted in the video are below. If you have any questions, feel free to send a message or comment. The only power tools used were a table saw for cutting staves for the shell, chop saw for the rim pieces, a drill press, and a belt sander for the outside edges.

The music is an old band I was in, The Dawn of Things to Come. No, that's not the drum being played. That's a DW 4x14 snare with a Custom Oak Yamaha 3 piece kit.

A super huge extra thanks goes out to Smiley, the human god of stave drum building:

  • I have been wondering about making a stave drum myself, but from English oak. If you want to kill the ring a little, try moongel, or, just slap some ductape on there, always does the trick :) you can also try tuning the bottom head a little lower than the top.

  • @WhySamuelWhy definitely check out SmileyTheJazzCat's page (link in the description) He uses many more power tools and homemade jigs as well.

Thanks for the ideas, but I've already tried those as well as many more. I cut the ring down some by re-adjusting the snare wires and I ended up tuning the bottom head about twice as loose as I ever have.

  • @WhySamuelWhy Everybody keeps saying moongel and it makes me laugh... I'm still waiting for my "special order" of a coated batter head! Ha! From everything I've found in the forums, the Evans Genera HD is gonna be the answer. (finding drum parts in Thailand is not the easiest of chores ;-(

Good luck with your drum! If you have any questions, feel free to send a message
