2011 SJSU Gymnastics Senior Night

San Jose-The lights in Spartan Gym shone brightly Friday night for the San Jose State women's gymnastics team as the Spartans scored the second-highest team score in school history in a quadrangular meet with Boise State, UC Davis and Seattle Pacific.

San Jose State scored a 195.550 to finish second to Boise State, just .375 out of first. The two teams were tied after three rotations at 146.675, but Boise State got a 49.250 on vault to the Spartans 48.875 on floor to win the meet.

The Spartans scored a season-best 48.850 on vault, season-best 48.900 on bars (tying for the fifth-best in school history), season-best 48.925 on beam (tying for fifth-best in school history) and a 48.875 on floor.

"I am really pleased with the way we performed tonight," said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright. "We started off well and stayed with it. We did not give up, and I am really proud of everybody. This meet was dedicated to the seniors, and I think we gave them a good last meet in Spartan Gym."

Thomasina Wallace won the all-around with a 39.325. She tied the balance beam school record for a 9.900 as she tied for first on the event. Wallace also tied for first on bars with a 9.900 and added a 9.825 on vault and a 9.700 on floor.

"This was a very exciting meet tonight," said Wallace. "It was fun to send the seniors out with a great score, and I just wanted to help my team. After my fall last week, I wanted to go out and show what I could do. I was so excited when I hit and then all my teammates hit after me."

The three Spartan seniors competed for the final time in Spartan Gym and made memorable performances for each of them. Shanice Howard scored a season-best 9.750 on vault and added a 9.575 on bars. Katie Merritt scored a 9.750 on vault, a 9.75 on bars and a 9.500 on beam. Lily Swann scored a career-best 39.175 in the all-around and was second on the floor with a 9.875. She added a 9.825 on vault, 9.775 on bars and a 9.700 on beam.

Boise State won the meet with a 195.925 that included a spectacular vault from Hailey Gaspar that received a 9.950. UC Davis was third wit a 192.325, while Seattle Pacific scored a 190.025.

San Jose State now takes to the road for a meet next Friday, February 18, at Southern Utah. The Spartans then compete at Oregon State with Washington and UC Davis on Friday, February 25.
