  • Well it's a damn fine song; I only wish I had known this 25 years ago! The Americans love it because 'knocker upper man' has a completely different meaning in the US!

  • I confess I'm an American and the phrase "knocker upper man" made me smile.

It's partly because of the child like alliteration or whatever you all that ending. But "knocker upper" also has a bit of naughtiness about it ("knocking somebody up" means to get them pregnant.)

    And now you know :o)

  • This song was written by Mike Canavan, a lad from Harpurhey who now lives in Unsworth, Bury. He can be heard almost every Monday night at the Oddfellows Arms in Middleton.
