I just tried this for the first time for my divemaster training tonight. I had my weights in my bcd, and my buddy had his in his weight belt, so as soon as i grabbed his bcd I floated straight to the top. Oops!

It is a fun skill, we had so much fun with this skill. We were not alowed to lose contact and this is an important thing with Buddy Breathing. You better check your manual. Buddy breathing — In the shallow end, demonstrate techniques that are to include proper signaling, maintaining contact, donor control, breath cycle, the need to exhale (make a sound) when the regulator is out of the mouth and coordination of movements.

The whole exercise is a stress test and is designed to see how you react to multiple issues. As a Divemaster, you will have issues with student divers on a regular basis and you need to be able to deal with the issues and look after the student. It is a brilliant exercise and one I recommend EVERY diving buddy pair practice (in the safety of a pool) to check out their task loading skills! It will help you focus on resolving issues under the water...
if you want to enhance the fun: do it in a 16 feet depth pool, keeping neutrally buoyant, without touching ground nor surface...

not when both guy have contactson. For those unaware - if you have contacts on keep your eyes closed at all cost when in clorinated water - the lenses shrink drastically in contact with the clorine and after giving you a taste of how your eyes would feel in a vise just fall off.
Happy diving.

it's part of the PADI Divemaster exam.
unless you are doing somethings "serious" or manage to get yourself in trouble (like get trapped or entangle yourself really bad) it has no practical application. my best guess is that the pool equipment exchange is just a way of demonstrating buddy cooperation, knowledge of each others equipment and how well you can handle yourself while missing part of your life support.
It's a lot of fun though (unless you have contacts - and we both did) LOLSSSSSSS
