Last of the lap straight hand-built lifeguard doery--18 feet, 2,000 lbs, 9' bow oars, 8 1/2' stern oars. Guys train and lock in on a big one during a nor'easter on the east coast of Long Island, NY.
Note from videographer: You and Cleary will forever be worshipped as the dudes who rode the biggest wave inTofH history in a wooden boat! There is a CD of this on the end of my surf movie "Call me Ishmael".
I remember the day so well:
You guys made the decision to go out and the sweep was so mean it was taking many,many-attempts. I had a roll of b&w back in the Point at my house so I hopped on my Triumph Bonnie,
sped down to the Point, grabbed and loaded the film and when I got back you guys were still at it!!
I set up on the mound fronting main chair and after a while of fighting the sweep and big wind along comes a Freight Train set (by the way is was a hurricane passing by, not a mere noreaster!)
Then after brute rowing you guys dropped into a beaut and rode the most epic friggin wave ANYONE has ever!!!! You and Cleary were elevated to God status after that and to this day, I no longer worship the Catholic God of my youth but bow down to "The Briggs and Cleary" diety of Lido!
Mahoney, Mike-videographer
Exciting to watch!
