A Brief History of Blackface

The stock characters of blackface minstrelsy have played a significant role in disseminating racist images, attitudes and perceptions worldwide. Every immigrant group was stereotyped on the music hall stage during the 19th Century, but the history of prejudice, hostility, and ignorance towards black people has insured a unique longevity to the stereotypes. White America's conceptions of Black entertainers were shaped by minstrelsy's mocking caricatures and for over one hundred years the belief that Blacks were racially and socially inferior was fostered by legions of both white and black performers in blackface.

Really great and excellent work brother. Thank you for your time & effort, in reaching & teaching the importance of the imagery, & its negative affects, historically, has had on Our peoples' families & friends.

This serves those who think racism just popped up the year they were born or, worse, think the "fuss" about it is ridiculous &, that We (always referring to Us & themselves,) need to "just get along," while the Irish & British have been at each other's throats for 800 years. Vigilance.

If you watch original episodes of Tom and Jerry in several episodes Jerry's owner was a large black woman and they the way her face and voice were portrayed the same racist stereo types seen on this video. The episodes were later altered to cut out the head of the woman and voice acting was redone by a different actress.
