New York City is changing all its street signs. As part of a federal mandate, the letters in the signs have to change from all-capital letters to a combination of upper and lowercase. (Sept. 30)
And anybody who claims that reading ALL CAPS is easier is completely out of their minds. Try reading a novel in ALL CAPS and then tell me it is easier.
For all you haters out there, listen up. Clearview is a nearly perfectly designed typeface, probably the most legible typeface in the world. Not only does it look much better than Highway Gothic or any other banal stock font, but its use as a road sign has been scientifically proven to increase legibility, especially in older drivers and at night. If NYC is replacing signs anyways, it is only prudent of them to adopt a smart new standard.
The US Department of transportation (which forced through the new rules through the Federal Highway Administration) has stoppeed the lower-case mandate- for now. But it could be renewed next year so those who like our current UPPER-CASE STREET SIGNS HAD BETTER SPEAK UP AGAINST GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE!
@pannoni1 Yeah, and the all text pedestrian signals were also a cool thing. What is cool though, is you can buy a reproduction of the old colored street signs online on the NYCDOT website!
I hate the mixed case street sign BS. All caps are much easier to read. I just hope the mixed cased plague doesn't hit other signs like stop signs and speed limit signs. I also hate clearview, a lot. It looks way too artistic.
@ZEROEVILDARKCOOL 3M lobbyed to have this done. They are the biggest manufacturer of reflective letters in the country. Most of our poeple in Government are sell outs I think.
Not to mention eBay changed some of their fonts to Trebuchet MS (another font that I feel is getting overused as of late). What's so special about a large x-height?
ALL CAPS ARE WAAAAAAAAAAY BETTER BUT REFLECTIVE SIGNS ARE GOOD
