Meinhardt Light Art invited visitors from around the world to create their own rainbow at night by playing 'Hopscotch' up and down the historic Moore Stairs at Circular Quay in Sydney.

'Hopscotch' was one of 40+ stunning light art installations from local and international artists created especially for Vivid Sydney where children were encouraged to climb on interactive sculptures and aspiring photographers can put their night camera settings to the test.

Each pair of steps is illuminated with a pre-selected colour mixed LED spotlight creating a complete rainbow of light from the top of the stairs to the bottom. The light beams are tightly controlled to create a seamless flow of striking colours while a micro-wave beam detects movement on individual steps automatically switching the light on and off. Running up the steps creates a moving rainbow of light, while two people playing together can create an instant and ever changing dance of light.

Fiona Venn, Senior Lighting Designer, at Meinhardt said: "This interactive installation displays the full colour spectrum of light from violet blue to deep red. The monochromatic light and RGB colour mixing blurs the boundaries between colours as you play with them. In a playful way, this installation shows how modern sensor technology allows us to have light only where we need it. By controlling both where and when light is used we can save on energy use."
