Do they normally run with the manifolds glowing red hot? All the test videos I've seen, the manifolds are glowing, but is that how it runs, nominally, when its inside of the car?
If the combustion chamber is small enough for really high compression, you can get away without having rings. It'll just run poorly until the ring grooves expand.

if there were no rings, how would the car start? it wouldnt have compression.

I wonder if they actually have rings, or if they just let the heat expansion of the empty ring land serve as the ring.
