The generations don't always see eye to eye on a few things: the perception of institutions, rewards, feedback, work/life balance, and training and development. For instance, take the idea of "feedback" in the workplace. Traditionalists often took the route, "No news is good news." Baby Boomers expected a formal yearly review with lots of documentation. Gen Xers expected frequent, honest, and immediate feedback and our Millennials want feedback at the push of a button!

So frustrating! Often times the older generations may cast you as "lazy" because they don't see you doing something they think is "useful". Gen X was very independent and "found" things to do without anyone asking or directing them. So, your manager's behavior probably reflected the fact you weren't doing something they deemed productive. Are there things you see need to get done? Provide your thoughts to your manager--you're taking the initiative--a valued characteristic for Gen X!

I, a millennial, was told that my behavior revealed that I was lazy. However this is before my manager discovered that the work I had been assigned had been finished for three days, and I had been asjking for another project, and wasn't given one. My generation X manager assumed I was lazy because I am a Millennial.
