The Love That Could Not Be Broken

Sarah is 16 years old and she is dating Jareth, King of the Goblins. They are very much in love, but are separated. Hoggle takes Sarah to the Underground as often as possible so that she may visit her love, if only for a short while. However, Karen finds out and forbids Sarah from ever seeing Jareth again. Sarah is heartbroken and the Goblin King hears her weeping so he comes to her. She explains the situation and he tells her that since she is under the age of 21, they must comply with Karen's wishes. They see each other for the last time in the park and Jareth asks if there is any way that Sarah can convince Karen to give in. The answer is no and the two must say goodbye. As the years pass, they are both haunted by memories of the past and fall into depression. Sarah stops talking to her family and spends most of her time by herself in the park and the adjoining forest. Jareth cuts his hair and starts smoking, but still watches over his beloved Sarah. After 5 years, Sarah is finally 21 and Jareth sends crystal bubbles through the veil between their worlds and shows her a memory of their first dance together. When she returns home, she finds a piece of parchment with a letter from Jareth and she sends a reply. Soon after, she calls on Hoggle and begs him to take her Underground. She is reunited with Jareth and when he offers her the dreams she had once rejected, she accepts and never leaves his side again.

And yes, he grew his hair out again after he cut it the first time. That's why it's long when she's 21.
