& I know this video is sped up a lot, but itll turn out the best if you iron each section slowly, rather than fast & multiple times.
Using heat on your hair breaks the bonds so it can take shape.
Cooling it afterward will seal the bond in that shape.

For protection of your hair from heat, try "Thermal" protectors/products.
They work great. :) & They make your hair feel smoother.
You could also straighten your hair better if you ran a a brush down your hair in front of the straightener, even better with a finer bristled brush, or one of those straightening brushes with 2 sides..
